When it comes to buying gifts there is no occasion quite as tricky as Valentine’s Day. Not only does the proximity to Christmas mean that your object of affection probably already has everything their heart desires, but our bank balances are still feeling a little fragile from our festive season over indulgences! Plus, there’s the whole minefield buying something that shows how well you know your beloved, but is also on par in terms of size of gesture with what they are going to get you!
Wouldn’t it be easier if we could just ask our other halves what they actually want? Of course it would, but that would be cheating now wouldn’t it? We have asked a handful of Nottinghamians what they would like for Valentine’s Day, if they were allowed to cut out all the messing around and just ask for it!

I think what I’d really like is a nice blazer. Not only is it a useful thing to own but my girlfriend has got excellent taste and always picks things out for me that I would never pick out for myself. Plus her picks always look far better than anything I would have chosen!

If I’m being honest I think what I’d really love for Valentine’s Day this year is a little bit of peace and quiet. I’m only joking, but really a pair of good noise cancelling headphones wouldn’t go a miss, useful for the commute to work and blocking out the sounds of Made in Chelsea around the house.

I’ve got to admit, I’m a sucker for an old fashioned romance and you just can’t go wrong with flowers and chocolates or sweets. Perfume is also a good choice and I have a top tip for men looking to buy fragrances – take a sneaky look at her dresser and check out which bottle is running low!

My other half has a… creative… approach to Valentine’s gifts, and I once received a film on DVD which I had openly admitted I hated just because he wanted to wind me up. If he is reading this (hello!) then what I’d really like this year is something to make up for the Les Miserables DVD… and I don’t have cheap taste!

I don’t have to tell my other half what I want for Valentine’s Day – she nails it every year! I like whiskey and colognes but am very particular about both, but luckily for me she knows exactly which ones I like!
